Luke Littlerrushed into the second round of his first tournamentWorldMatchplay featuring a 10-2 victory over Ryan Searle.
Littler, the second favorite in his debut at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, appeared to be moving quickly as he took a 6-0 advantage.
Even though Searle managed to score late, there was no realistic chance of coming back against Littler, who maintained an average of almost 109.
"I was really looking forward to tonight," Littler said onSky SportsI was determined to win, to experience the thrill of victory, and I've achieved it in a few instances.
Following the announcement earlier this week that he had failed his driving theory exam for the fourth time, Littler mentioned that he hasn't been completing his study for it because he has been concentrating on his sport, stating, "I have a competition to focus on."
I've been practicing a lot," he said. "Clearly, I haven't shared much on social media, but I've been staying at home putting in the time, day after day, and I'm happy it has paid off tonight.
World number four Stephen Buntingemerged from a dogfight against Ryan Joyce with a 10-8 win.
Joyce overcame a 8-4 deficit to tie the match at 8-8 when Bunting seemed distracted while attempting to finish from 45, and later came very close to taking a 9-8 lead after narrowly missing a double five.
Bunting answered with a 180 and then exited from 41 to ensure his advancement, but couldn't conceal his irritation.
I'm really disappointed," he stated. "We faced off last year. Fortunately, I haven't pushed myself to the limit this time and have preserved some energy for the upcoming round. We keep going, we've made it to the next stage.
The fifth seed, Jonny Clayton, managed to win against Martin Schindler with a score of 10-7, even though the German competitor had stronger statistics throughout most of the match.
Clayton's average stood at 99.60, whereas Schindler achieved 103.45, although the Welsh athlete chose his opportunities wisely to move forward.
I'm here, and I'm determined to win this competition," Clayton stated. "I hope it turns out to be my successful week. I enjoy it when I make it past the first round.
Earlier 13th seed Gary Andersoneliminated Luke Woodhouse 10-5 even though the Englishman achieved an impressive 167 finish.
Four seeds were returned home during Sunday's afternoon session, with additional surprises coming after the exits of top seed Luke Humphries and eighth seed Nathan Aspinall on Saturday.
The seventh-seeded Damon Heta was defeated by Andrew Gilding in a match that extended into extra frames, with Gilding ultimately winning 12-10 after Heta's late surge failed to make an impact.
Gilding moves on to face Dirk van Duijvenbode, who defeated 10th seed Rob Cross 10-8 following a stunning comeback from 6-2 down in an impressive match.
Jermaine Wattimena defeated 15th seed Peter Wright with a score of 10-8, and Mike De Decker overcame 12th seed Dave Chisnall by a margin of 10-7.
