Skubal's gem, Vierling's heroics lift Tigers past Rangers to end six-game slump

ARLINGTON, Texas — Matt Vierling delivered a game-tying hit with two outs in the eighth inning, helping the Detroit Tigers end their longest losing streak of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Texas Rangers on Sunday evening.

Vierling's base hit through the middle against Chris Martin (1-6) brought in Gleyber Torres after the Rangers finally managed to make progress against Tigers' ace Tarik Skubal in the seventh inning.

Skubal, the current AL Cy Young Award recipient and a participant in last Tuesday's All-Star Game, was performing well with a two-hit shutout entering the seventh inning. He departed with runners on second and third base and two outs, and Adolis García scored due to a wild pitch from Tyler Holton (5-3).

Will Vest came into the game in the eighth inning and recorded four consecutive outs to secure his 16th save.

Skubal recorded 11 strikeouts without issuing any walks, throwing 105 pitches in his seventh game this season with double-digit strikeouts.

Zach McKinstry hit a single to score Wenceel Pérez in the second inning, giving Detroit their first run.

Texas left-hander Jacob Latz gave up six hits and two walks in five innings during his third start of the season and the fourth of his 72 major league appearances. Latz took the mound instead of Nathan Eovaldi, who reported tightness on Saturday.

Corey Seager, the only left-handed hitter in the starting lineup facing left-handed pitcher Skubal, recorded the first two hits against him. Seager extended his on-base streak to 21 games, marking the longest active run in the American League.
